Airports closed
Thousands of angry airline passengers remain stranded at Heathrow and Gatwick airport after freezing weather conditions forced many to spend the night sleeping on terminal floors. Heathrow, the UK’s busiest airport, has been closed to all inbound flights. What is normally the airlines’ busiest day of the festive season has been cut as flights across Europe have either been cancelled or are subject to delays.
Swedish terror attack
A suicide bomber blew himself up in Stockholm this weekend and was just minutes away from wreaking carnage among Christmas shoppers. The man was carrying a cocktail of explosives and could have caused massive casualties. The bomber Taimour Abdulwahab, was the only person to die in Saturday’s attack. Two other people were injured when the bomber detonated a car before blowing himself up.
No to England
FIFA President Sepp Blatter reveals Russia as holders for the 2018 World Cup. This came as a humiliating blow for England as they believed their bid to stage the 2018 tournament would be accepted. Reality has hit football fans and many believe that they may never witness a world cup held in England. The earliest England can now stage football’s premier event is 2026 after Qatar were also named hosts of the 2022.
Snow arrives
A freezing winter has set in across northern Europe and has hit Britain. Heavy snowfall across the country has resulted in severe disruption to road, rail and air travel as well as the closure of over 6,500 schools. The snow and the freezing temperatures continued to disrupt travel across Europe as airports at cities including London and Edinburgh remained shut.
North Korea attacks
Smoke rises from South Korea’s Yeonpyeong island near the border of North Korea. Dozens of artillery shells have been fired by North Korea, hitting the South Korean Island. The incident comes amid tensions over North Korea’s nuclear program and the announcement of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il’s youngest son as his successor.
Prince William engaged
Prince William and Kate Middleton officially announced their engagement at St James’s Palace. The couple will be married in the summer of next year. The couple have been together for eight years and got engaged during a recent holiday in Kenya. Kate Middleton’s engagement ring, which once belonged to the late Princess Diana, is said to make William still feel close to his mother.
Students protest the cuts
Thousands of students march on the streets of London in protest against cuts. The march was also held in protest at planned cuts to the education maintenance allowance, which provides college students from the poorest backgrounds with extra financial support. The cuts seem to hit the middle working classes hardest. The Prime Minister is certainly not winning over the generation of voters.
Giant stag killers
Britain’s largest wild animal has been killed by a hunter for order of someone seeking his head and huge antlers as a trophy. But locals claim to have seen the Exmoor Emperor alive and well this week. His death sickened wildlife lovers, but he is said to be now roaming ghost-like in the hills. The 9ft red deer stag carried a heavy £1,250 price tag on his head.
